The first thing to do is to disconnect the car battery Negative or minus terminal, once the terminal is disconnected there will be no power or battery voltage flowing through the car’s electronics.
If your car’s battery is located in the boot, there is an old trick you can perform to reduce the amount of inconvenience and frustration while the battery is disconnected. Take a microfiber towel or cloth and tie a knot around the boot locking hook using the towel. This way, even if the boot lid falls down or closes, the boot will not close fully, and you will be able to open it up again. If the boot lid closes with the battery disconnected, then you won’t be able to open it at all without a backup physical key, as unlocking the boot lid will need battery power, and that will be unavailable as the battery has been disconnected.

Even if the battery in your car is under the car’s bonnet or hood, and opening the hood is electronically controlled, then you can place a cloth or towel above the hood lock, while the battery is disconnected.
If you have closed the boot lid by mistake, and don’t have the spare key in hand, then we have a different solution, about which I will tell you now!

If the battery in your car’s boot has been disconnected, and the boot lid has closed, this is how you can fix it. Most cars with the battery fitted in the boot will have a battery positive extension terminal with a red cover, under the bonnet or hood of the car! Now, for this step you will need to have a battery jump-start cable, a spare 12 volt fully charged battery and the car key remote. Connect one end of the jump start cable lead to the spare battery positive or plus terminal, and the other end of the jump start lead has to be connected to the positive extension terminal under the hood. Once this connection is done, the car will have power flowing through the electrical wires, and you can unlock the car by pressing the unlock button on the car’s remote.

After you have unlocked the car, don’t forget to disconnect the jump start lead from the front extension terminal and a spare battery to avoid any shorts or mishaps. Every battery extension terminal will have a red color cover or cap, which has to be removed in order to connect to the terminal. Once you are done using the terminal under the car’s hood, don’t forget to place the terminal cover back properly in the same position as what the car manufacturer had intended it to be in. If the cover is not fitted back properly, then it could loosen up and fall, and this will expose an open battery Positive Terminal in your car, which can in turn cause shorting of electronics, and a lot of money wasted in potential repairs.

By any chance, if your existing car battery is low on charge, the best thing to do is to recharge it properly and then start the car. If that is not an option, and you need to get the car started immediately, and you would like to use the Battery jump start cables to get the car started, then please don’t connect the Jumpstart leads to the front battery positive extension terminal.

Connecting to the spare battery and jump start leads to the front terminal extension in a rear battery car, can cause shorting of sensitive electronics within the car, like Entertainment components, Body control Module, or even the Engine Control Module. Any of these things failing will cost you a good amount of money to fix.
